Mail Forwarding and Domicile: The Full-Timer's Legal Home Base

When you give up a fixed address, you need a legal home state. Here's how to establish one — and why it matters more than most full-timers realize.

What Domicile Actually Means

Domicile is the state that considers you a legal resident — for income tax purposes, for vehicle registration, for driver's license, and for voting. It is not the same as where you are physically located at any given moment. A full-time RVer can be camping in Oregon while legally domiciled in South Dakota.

Why it matters: your domicile state determines whether you pay state income tax. South Dakota, Texas, and Florida have no state income tax. If you're earning significant remote income, the right domicile choice is worth thousands of dollars per year.

  • ✓ Strong banking and business infrastructure

  • – Higher vehicle registration fees
  • – Sales tax on RV purchase (6.25%) is significant
  • – Vehicle inspection required annually
  • – Some counties have emissions testing

Best for Southeast travelers and snowbirds

  • – Fewer dedicated full-timer mail services than SD/TX

How to Establish Domicile (Step by Step)

The process varies by state but the core steps are similar. This is the South Dakota process — the fastest and most full-timer-friendly.

Choose a mail forwarding service

Sign up before you travel. America's Mailbox or My Dakota Address will provide you a physical address in South Dakota. This becomes your legal address for all documents.

Travel to South Dakota

You must physically be in the state. Rapid City and Sioux Falls are the main hubs. Plan at least 2 days — some people do it in one day but more time is less stressful.

Get a South Dakota driver's license

Bring your current license, passport or birth certificate, Social Security card, and proof of your SD address (the mail service provides this document). The SD DMV is generally fast — expect 1–2 hours.

Register your vehicle(s)

At the same DMV visit or at a county treasurer's office. You'll need your title(s), proof of insurance with SD address, and payment. Lifetime registration is available for older vehicles — worth doing.

Update your voter registration

Optional but recommended. You can register at the DMV or by mail using your SD address.

Update all financial accounts and insurance

Banks, credit cards, brokerage accounts, insurance policies — all should show your SD address. Some institutions are slow about this; update each one.

Your mail forwarding service is your lifeline. Choose one that specializes in full-timer logistics — they understand USPS hold mail, package forwarding, and scanning.

  • → Scan envelopes (and sometimes contents) so you can view online
  • → Forward physical mail on your schedule
  • → Accept packages from UPS/FedEx (not all USPS mail forwarding accepts these)
  • → Provide a physical street address (not a PO Box) for legal documents

What to look for

  • → Physical street address (required for driver's license)
  • → Package acceptance (UPS, FedEx, DHL)
  • → Online scan-before-forward option
  • → Fast forward turnaround
  • → Legal document handling (certified mail, etc.)
  • → Reasonable forwarding costs — some services charge per piece
